Driving
Advisement
Driving safely
requires sophisticated cognitive skills that (unlike physical or
motor deficits) are often hidden to the casual observer. If you
are recovering from a brain injury and are serious about resuming
driving, and may have been affected by brain injury, we recommend
and offer a comprehensive off-the-road evaluation of cognitive skills
required for driving. These skills include:
- Judgment
- The ability
to react quickly
- Make rapid
decisions
- Adjust
to changing circumstances
- Control
impulses
- Respond
consistently
- Deal with
more than one thing at a time
- Endurance
- Eye-hand
coordination and tracking.
It is usually
possible to complete this procedure in 3 hours.
Once you have
successfully completed the clinical assessment, you will receive
a referral for a behind-the-wheel evaluation. When all the information
is in, we will help you and your family make a rational decision
about driving.
